Book Drive for Warri Prison
Librarians drawn from different states of the country, under the auspices of Library Advocacy Group are seeking new and fairly used books to be donated to Warri Prison in Delta State, on 1st August, 2019. This is in furtherance of the efforts aimed at increasing Nigeria’s literacy rate through reaching the underserved, vulnerable and outlier populations of our society with reading materials. We are leaving no one behind as we advocate and push for improved literacy rate in Nigeria, as it is the foundational skill that enables every other type of learning.
Prisons are correctional institutions. Getting prisoners to read and take O’level examinations will help them survive better when they are free, and occupy them gainfully while still incarcerated.
Why Warri Prison?
Nigerian Librarians will have their annual National Conference in Warri, 28th July – 2nd August, 2019.
As Information and ‘book’ professionals who understand how the availability of reading materials can transform lives and communities, we are embarking on a book drive for Warri Prison to:
- provide textbooks for the incarcerated persons who would want to continue in their studies and take O ’level examinations;
- provide books for prison inmates to gain new knowledge that will help them fit into the society better when they complete their prison terms;
- provide reading materials that can assist to channel the thoughts of the incarcerated persons to beneficial pathways.
Consequently, we seek new or fairly used primary and secondary school curriculum-based books, including reference and motivational books, to be donated to Warri Prison.
